Vintage Ring Gold Silver Diamonds Openwork Unisex Man Woman India c1960s (6821)

Vintage ring. 14k gold, silver and diamonds. Made in India, second half 20th century.

Measurements: Weight is 5.7 grams. Approximately US size 8 1/4. Cannot be resized. Diameter of central diamond a little under 7mm.

Description : Fabulously made ring, suitable for a man or a woman. Bombe ring has continuous cylindrical shape, tapers towards the back and broadens at the top/bezel. The main body of the work is composed of extremely fine gold openwork scrolls and foliate design, reminiscent of the Mughals and the screens of the zenana (harem) from which woman viewed the world. The cylindrical shape rises well above the level of the finger and arches around on either side, edged with finely bands of small rose-cut diamonds set in silver and alternating with tiny trios of silver granulation. The upper 3/4 section of the ring is further enhanced by silver set/mounted polki diamonds that are relatively flat and very simply faceted. The diamonds on the sides are in triangular silver cells surrounded in turn by pear/tear shaped cells. The central, largest diamond is in a round setting within a star shape. Swoops of rosecuts surround the polki on the shoulders, adding further movement and interest to the design.

This ring is quite a feat of technology and workmanship and must have been made by a great master craftsman. It combines various techniques, mixed metals and materials in a light and airy way that belies the strength necessary to support them. Versatile and wearable, it also makes a very unusual wedding ring.

Marks and Metal: Like most old Indian jewelry, there are no hallmarks. Acid testing ensures at least 14k.
