Measurements:
Weight is 13.1 grams. Approximately 1 1/8inches long (3cm). Total weight of emeralds and rubies is 15.10ct.
Description :
Shaped like the buta or boteh curved flower on a paisley shawl, the earrings have a full half-globe of red and green beads that then curve and rise, like a scorpions tail to form the stem of the flower. The combination of red, green and gold is very effective. Earrings will start at the earlobe and then climb up the side of the ear, thus being called 'climbers'.
Climber earrings are especially effective and look great as frames to the face.
Depending on the angle from which the earrings are viewed, you will see different flower and foliate forms.
Strongly connected to the famous Tutti Frutti earrings created originally by Cartier.
Earrings are attached via screw backs, which were popular during the mid 1900's.
There is a clear right and left to these earrings.
Marks and Metal:
French hallmarks on wires include eagle head for 18k gold and lozenge mark for maker (not clearly legible).
There is a mark on the gold tube supporting the tapering 'tail' of the earrings, towards the end - see 'photos.
Condition:
Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY:
From the very early 20th century, beginning with the Cartier brothers in Paris, the French were keenly aware of and influenced by fabulous antique Indian forms and jewels. The shape and form of these earrings are highly reminiscent of magnificent mughal jewelry of the Renaissance era and years following that. The Mughals were especially fond of emeralds and rubies, and the combination of these gems and these colors is also an echo of their sophisticated and luxurious taste. French workmanship, especially originating in Paris is widely recognised as being of the highest quality and these earrings are a lovely example of mid century French jewelry. Modern, but still classy.
Another strong Cartier link to these earrings is the so-called 'tutti frutti' style, in which different gems, particularly emeralds and rubies were combined in jewelry.
The subtle coloring of these earrings and the way they will climb up your lobe, are created to enhance your eyes and complexion and will look great whether worn by day or night.
