Antique Victorian brooch pendant enhancer. 18k gold, carnelian, pearls, rubies and enamel. French made 19th century.

Measurements: A little under 1 3/4 inches (42mm) long. Weight is 18.0 grams.

Description : Slightly ovoid in shape. A large reserve with a bright orange-brown carnelian, intaglio carved with the head of a woman, Classic ancient Roman or Greek in appearance, seen in profile. The carnelian is held by very fine gold scalloped prongs. Beautiful border of receding concentric rings of pearls and rubies with an ultimate ring of black enamel. Trios of rectangular rubies colette set in gold at the cardinal points and single matching rubies between them. Pearls are most likely natural pearls as this jewel was made well before the advent of cultured pearls. (not tested).

Back with a long, curved hook for hanging from a chain and wearing as a pendant or enhancer. C-clasp of pin on a hinge, so it can fold away when not in use. Hinged pin for wearing as a brooch.

Marks: There are marks on the pin. One is a diamond shaped lozenge (typical of French maker's marks) with W over H and a pie-sign between them. Another French mark is also seen.

Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
