Antique Victorian brooch. 18k gold, enamel, garnet and diamonds. Made circa 1880s in England by Carlo Giuliano.

Measurements: 1 1/8 inch (28mm) accross. A little over an inch (27mm) high. Weight is 9.7 grams. Diamonds approximately .25ct each.

Description :Openwork, scrolls in an almost square shape. The center with a large, beautifully deep red garnet, gently faceted with a large, flat table. Held within a gold collette surrounded by a border of white enamel with gold pique dots. This in turn surrounded by the openwork gold scrolls, Rolling to shells and globes at the cardinal points and enamelled in black and white, which is almost a signature of Carlo Giuliano. On either side of the garnet, enclosed within black squares with white dots, are a pair of OMC (old mine cut) diamonds. Quality is superb. Lavish workmanship and unstinting artistic effort can be seen when we look at the back of the brooch and see the beauty of the work, which is no less detailed in the indented patterns on all surfaces. The center of the back with a glass-covered locket that could contain a minute portrait or more likely, a lock of hair. Clasp with secure catch. Carlo Giuliano was known for introducing Renaissance Revival and other Revival styles to England and for the fabulous quality of his workmanship. This brooch is a great example that will make a proud addition to any collection.
