Antique/vintage chain necklace. Very high k gold (see below) and lac. Made in India, first half 20th century. Unisex - suitable for a man or a woman.
Measurements: Length is approximately 29 inches (73.5cm). Weight is 29.3 grams, inclusive.
Description : A long necklace of unadorned olive-pit-shaped beads made of very high karat gold and supported from within by a hard resin substance called lac in India. Each bead is joined to its neighbours by thin gold loops. Extra length was created by adding a gold chain at the back. There is no clasp/opening as the necklace is easily pulled over the head.
Necklaces like this one are still being made in India today, a reflection of the versatility and popularity of the design. However, the quality of the work and gold content differs. The proportion of lac to gold is much higher in modern beads. These beads are much more solidly gold.
Another difference between this necklace and most others of this kind is that the connecting loops and chain at the back are also in 22k gold. Usually, the beads are joined by cotton thread and there is a thread that allows the wearer to elongate/shorten the necklace.
This is a most versatile necklace. Suitable to be worn by anyone looking to complete an outfit, look smart and brighten up their appearance.
Marks and Metal: As with all old Indian jewelry, there are no marks. The gold was electronically tested as at least 21k and we will guarrantee 18k to err on the side of caution.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
