Antique Victorian tie pin snake 14k gold pearl black enamel brooch unisex (7429)
Antique Victorian tie pin. 14k gold, pearl and enamel. Made in the UK, 19th century.
Unisex - suitable for a man or a woman.
Measurements: Weight is 3.2 grams. A little more than 3 1/2 inches (9.5cm).
Description : A long tie pin, tapering towards the pointy end and with a pearl set at the opposite side. Pearl has not been tested (may be natural or cultured). The pearl is the center of a flower form, emerging from golden, engraved sepals or petals that curve back towards the pin. Tiny and dainty and very fine, they entirely encircle the pearl. Slightly larger, similar foliage encircles the flower from below. In front, the leaves are overlapped by a snake's head. The snake's body coils around the pin, tapering towards the tail. The snake's body and head are enamelled in black, forming a scaly pattern against the gold. The head of the snake is set with a small diamond. Very small details.
While the gold of sepals/petals/foliage is yellow, the pin has a slightly rosy tinge.
A small loop has been attached to the back of the pin. This will accommodate a safety chain if the owner so desires.
Small, subtle, well made. Interesting conversation point that finishes of the attire of the best dressed people.
Marks and Metal: There is an illegible mark on the pin. Gold was electronically tested as 14k.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Small dark patch at the back where loop joins pin could be tarnish from age/a spot of solder - not visible from front and too small to clean/test. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY: snakes have been a popular theme in jewelry since ancient times. They are a symbol of many benefits such as eternal love and infinite blessings and protection.
