Antique Victorian snake serpent brooch. 14k gold, silver, diamonds and small rubies. Made 19th century.
Suitable for a man or a woman - unisex.

Measurements: Weight is 7.2 grams. 1 3/4 inches (4.5cm) long. 0.94ct diamonds.

Description : Marvellous snake brooch depicting a writhing, wriggling snake. The entire body set with diamonds. During the Victorian period, diamonds were almost always set in silver, which was seen to show them off to better effect in candle or gas light. Other gems were set in gold. The silver was layered over gold as in this case, with the gold back. Pin with c-clasp is also gold. Tiny cabochon ruby eyes.
Unlike much diamond jewelry, the artist-craftsman who made this brooch incorporated the silver mount into the subject and design. The silver loops and curves along with the body of the snake and forms scale-shaped cells in which the diamonds are placed. This feature twists and turns and adds very subtle interest to the design and form.
Engraved detail to top of head. Lower and upper jaws set with diamonds and a gold fang in his upper jaw.
Most unusual example in the wriggling realism and sense of movement of this diamond brooch.
Great glow and gleam of diamonds.
Perfect to wear with any attire and makes a great statement.

Marks and Metal: gold tests at least 14k.

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
