Antique Victorian ring. Gold and silver mount. Carved intaglio hardstone, which is believed to originate in the Ancient Roman period. Provenance: from the personal collection of the late Barry Weber (see below).

Measurements:

Weight is 18.8 grams. Just under US 10.5.

Description :

A large man's ring. Incorporates two fabulous features: The mount which is a rare mixture of gold and silver in alternating geometric segments. Neighboring sections of silver and gold are united by a uniform rich floral pattern. Back half of shank in beaten gold - very solid and sturdy looking.
The broad, manly proportions are reminiscent of an episcopal or Bishop's ring.
The second great feature of this ring is the hardstone intaglio cameo, possibly dating to the Ancient or Classic era. It depicts a charging bull. Strong powerful theme, powerfully depicted.

Marks and Metal:

No marks. The gold tests at various purities (at least 14k, but mostly more), which is typical of antique jewelry. The white metal is assumed to be silver.

Condition:

Good with minor wear commensurate with age.  Tiny nicks in stone on the side (does not impact the intaglio). Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY:

This pin came from the personal collection of Barry Weber. Barry's mother, Edith started an antique jewelry business that was well-known and highly regarded throughout the USA and abroad. Barry and his wife inherited her passion for jewelry and continued the tradition.   Barry lectured around the country, in universities and colleges and appeared for many years as a specialist on the Antiques Road Show. With his gentle disposition, passion and knowledge, his death a number of years ago was a great loss to the antique jewelry community. Jewelry from the Webers was worn on red carpets by the stars of the 20th century.
