Antique Victorian Earrings Onyx 14k Gold c1870-80 Black Elegant Dangle drop(7073)
Antique Victorian Earrings. 14k yellow gold and onyx. Made circa 1870 - 1880. Probably made in England.
Measurements: Weight is 18.1 grams. Length approximately 1 1/2 inches (4cm) not including wires.
Description : Black earrings, assumed to be made originally as mourning jewelry. Strong shapes and design pre-date the Art Deco period by at least 50 years. Surmounts like spinning tops -a horizontal band with conical sides above and below. A pair of small gold loops connect the surmounts to the oval drops. The loops allow the drops to swing and sway as the wearer moves. The drops are a very full oval, with black onyx shining like a mirror and reflecting light at every turn, which adds interest and catches the eye. Ostensibly austere, the earrings are full of interest, movement and diversity. The design may be 150 years old, but it suits today's sensibilities perfectly. Understated, yet complex. Perfect to wear with every outfit for a young hipster to an elegant grandmamma, they are highly flattering and suitable. Simple gold wires, easy to insert and comfortable to wear are most likely replacements.
Marks and Metal: Typical of earrings of this age, there are no marks. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. It is rare for antique earrings to come down to us in such good shape. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
