Antique Victorian earrings 18k gold silver diamonds garnets French (7488)
Antique Victorian earrings. 18k gold, silver, diamonds, cabochon garnets. Made in France, circa 1890.
Measurements: Weight is 4.3 grams. A little under 1 3/4 inches (4.5cm) long.
Description : Dangle drop ear pendants. Long, dangles, very elegant. 4 diamonds form the surmounts that lead to a long, articulated line of diamonds that swing and sway as the wearer moves.
They end in wonderful deep red, glowing garnets, round, full, lushious, that make a big statement. In total contrast, they are surrounded by a border of very finely set rose-cut diamonds that sets them off to great effect.
As was the custom during the Victorian era, diamonds were set in silver.
Workmanship of the highest quality.
Screw backs which may/not be original are suitable for non-pierced ears.
Marks and Metal: marked on wires of screwbacks. Marks are not at all legible, but I believe they are the French owl mark for 18k gold of unknown maker.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY: The late 19th century introduced greater technological ability into jewelry making and this combined with quality French artistic pride in their workmanship and superior designs, make jewelry of the place and time amongst the best ever produced. This is a great example of jewelry that combines all of these qualities. Versatile, totally wearable and supremely elegant. These earrings have been 'the best' for well over 125 years and will continue to be 'the best' for generations to come.
As a point of interest: We should remember that during the 19th century, as for centuries before, garnets were amongst the most highly regarded and sought after gems. Cabochon garnets were called carbuncles. It seems that the pendulum has swung back. Recently antique garnet jewelry of this quality is not only difficult to find, but it has sky-rocketed in value. When we have seen other cabochon garnet jewelry with diamonds, the workmanship has not been nearly as fine as that in this pair of earrings.
NOTE ON PICTURES: please note that 'photographs of round items such as globes and cabochon gems appear to have dents/dings. This is an effect of the 'photography. The "dings" are not there in reality (unless mentioned in Condition, above).
