Antique late Victorian - Edwardian earrings, small ear pendants. 18k yellow gold, platinum and diamonds. Made in France late 19th to early 20th century.
Measurements: Weight is 3.4 grams. Length is 5/8inch (1.6cm), not including the wire. Diamonds were independently appraised as 0.89 total, G color.
Description : Small ear pendants that are so comfortable and versatile that one never need remove them. Hence the name 'sleepers' or 'dormeuse' in French. A sturdy gold wire supports the surmount which is a simple, small diamond held in a platinum mount. At the time, before electricity, diamonds were shown off better in white metals (silver and then platinum from about 1900 onwards). A ring of openwork oval links support the claws that hold the diamond up and allow light to enter from behind. Platinum base above the gold back, which also allows light to enter from the sides and behind. A knife-edge thin layer of platinum over solid yellow gold bar connects to a gold bar at the back of the diamond drop. The loop connection allows some swinging motion of the diamond drop as the wearer moves. The diamond drop larger than the surmount, but identically mounted in openwork white over yellow gold base.
Although the earrings are quite small, the diamonds are very white and bright, thus drawing attention. They are extremely versatile - classic for wearing by day/night and need never be removed.
Marks and Metal: French hallmarks are not clearly legible, but metals were tested with acid and electronically.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
