Antique Victorian Earrings 18k gold emerald-paste pearls Day Night ear pendants (7321)
Antique Victorian Napoleon III Earrings. 18k yellow gold, emerald colored paste and pearls. Made in France, circa 1860-1880.
Measurements: Weight is 7.5 grams. 2 1/2 inches (6.5cm) long.
Description : Long ear pendant earrings. The tops separate from the bottom by simply slipping the bottoms over the wires. The tops can be worn alone for a simpler look by day, or with the bottoms, for a more elegant look. They are thus called Day / Night or Top / Drop earrings.
True to Victorian tradition, the ear wires go through the earlobe from back to front, showing that they are entirely original.
The tops consist of ribbons of chased gold with a square, emerald cut and colored paste in their center. Pastes are colette-set and closed at the back. They are very bright and gleaming green, but it is not possible to assess them thoroughly due to the closed back settings.
Small, round loops connect the drops. At their narrow apex, they have moulded foliate adornment. Bars of gold flare out towards a rounded bottom, forming an elongated pear shape. The bottom is filled with scrolling gold ribbons, chased and twisted into a bow with a matching emerald in their center. On top and bottom, the paste is bordered by a small pearl, forming a line: pearl, paste, pearl. Baubles of gold coming to a point at the bottom.
Marks and Metal: Maker's mark L N on either side of a tree; owl mark for 18k gold are both found on the wires. Possible hallmark on loop joining top to bottom of one earring, but not legible.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Gold bubbles at the bottom with a few dings. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
