Signed Antique Victorian dormeuse sleeper earrings. 18k gold, diamonds and cabochon garnets. Made in Paris, France by Master Goldsmith, Emile Descartes circa 1890.

Measurements: Weight is 4.6 grams. Length of earring, not including wires 5/8 inch (1.5cm)

Description : Classic oval cluster flower form earrings. Centers are oval, cabochon garnets, known as carbuncles during the Victorian era when they were wildly popular. Deep velvety red, open at the back, the garnets are lush and lovely.  Garnets are surrounded by a border of rosecut diamonds that offset the garnets. Original hinged gold wires go from back to front of ear lobe. Narrow at tip, to facilitate ease of putting through ears. Clip into place. It is rare to find the original wire findings as usually they were replaced to suit new owners.
These are the ultimate 'goto' earrings - suitable to wear to work, on weekends with jeans or to a party. Timeless French elegance.

Marks and Metal:  French hallmarks include the eagle head for 18k gold and the maker's mark lozenge with initials ED for Emile Descartes.

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age.  Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY: Jewelry that was so comfortable it could be worn by day/night and to sleep in, was known in English as 'Sleepers' and in French as 'Dormeuse'. They are extremely comfortable to wear, hence they never need be removed and they make an excellent basis of any jewelry collection.
Like the Georgians, the Victorians were extremely fond of cabochon garnets, which they called 'carbuncles'. These particular garnets are a lovely, lively shade of red. Dormeuse earrings with garnets have become highly sought after. This is an especially nice pair, with the gleaming, rich garnets. Original gold wire findings are rare.
