Description :
An oval, openwork, slightly spherical shape that rises in concentric circles from the outside to the center. The center is set with an old cut diamond in a raised gold colette with crimped sides. Bright, clear diamond forms the focal point of the brooch. Radiating around it is a ring of gold cells - that come to a point at their outside (like an antique pen nib). Within each cell is a tiny pearl and then a larger one, forming the first two of the concentric, well-matched pearl circles. Seeming to float around these, is another ring of pearls with a step down to a similar arrangement of gold cells containing a single pearl each and alternating with alightly larger pearls on gold 'stalks' forming the outer border. Pearls are well matched. The varying sizes of the concentric rings adds subtle interest to the design.
The entire oval is raised above the level of the garment by an openwork gallery over a sturdy, gold mount. This allows light to entire from behind the brooch and increases the play of light on the pearls and adds to their sparkle.
The brooch has a hinged pin and secure clasp as well as a bale to hang it as a pendant.
Pin and bale are possibly replacements or later additions for wearer's convenience.
The rectangular box is gently domed which fits the arching dome of the brooch. Made of leather on the outside with gold embossed border. Velvet fitted bottom and silk top inside. Metal clasp is secure and clicks closed nicely.
The crown in the lid of the box indicates that this company sold to the Queen Victoria and her Royal family.
Marks and Metal:
No marks found. Acid tested as at least 14k (and since English, likely 15k).
Box is marked in the lid: Longman & Strongi'th Arm over a crown ; Waterloo Pall Mall; Widdowson & Veale; from 73 Strand.

THE STORY:
As described above, the crown in the lid of the retailer indicates a very high end establishment that sold to Queen Victoria and her family. Pearls have traditionally been valued above any other gemstone (including diamonds) and were the jewel of choice for royalty. Think Queen Elizabeth the First and her dresses and hair entirely pearl encrusted. Her namesake, Queen Elizabeth II like her own mother, another Queen Elizabeth, was rarely seen without her pearls.
The fine workmanship of this brooch makes it fit for any queen/king.
Unisex - understated elegance for a man or a woman, and versatile: Wear to work, to a party, on your hat, sleeve, lapel or around your neck.
