Antique Arts and crafts very long chain necklace / sautoir. Silver, amethysts, rock crystal and pearls. French, circa 1900.
Measurements: Weight is 26.0 grams. Length is approximately 60 inches (154cm).
Description : Versatile long, long chain, known as a sautoir in France. These elongated rectangular links, alternating with twisted 8-shaped linked were very popular during the Arts & Crafts period. This chain is a little nicer than most in that it has 6 stations, each with a beautiful oval amethyst gem bordered by a small rock crystal bead and then a small pearl. The beads and pearls show the amethysts off beautifully. Lovely glow and depth to the amethysts.
If there was a clasp, it is no longer functional, but the adjoining loops are still there, one of which has hallmarks (see below).
The necklace is so long that it can be worn wound around the neck a number of times. It could also be worn multiple times wound around the arm.
Great accessory, as wearable today as it was over 100 years ago.
Marks and Metal: There are 2 marks on a loop where the clasp should be, but they are not clear.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
