The gems are set in a layer of silver over a backing of gold, typical of the 19th century. The drop is attached via a loop so that it can move and swing independantly of the upper section. The center of the piece is a pearl, believed to be a natural (not cultured) pearl, surrounded by diamonds in the form of a flower, called a marguerite, by the French. c-clasp to gold pin is original. A pair of loops is attached to an 18k gold chain that transforms the brooch to a pendant/necklace. Beautiful workmanship. Highly wearable and versatile. Came from the collection of a French gentleman collector.
Marks: There are a lot of hallmarks: the pin has Russian marks. The back is hallmarked twice: once by the original maker in Moscow, pre Russian revolution; secondly by the Soviets some time later. The clasp/loop of the chain is also hallmarked.
