Antique late Victorian earrings. 14k yellow gold, diamonds and black enamel. Made circa 1885 - 1905.

Measurements: Weight is 4.7 grams. Diamonds approximately .30 to .40ct each. Approximately 1 1/4 inches (3cm) long.

Description :Surmounts in the form of spherical wirework cages that suspend rounded oval drops via loops, allowing them to swing and sway as the wearer moves. Branching foliage leads to a horseshoe semicircle border in gold and black enamel depicting similar foliage. In the center is an Old European Cut diamond supported by narrow bars of gold with golden globules, almost like dewdrops on a twig. Graduated golden globules on the sides of the mount add subtle, fine detail. Beneath is a trio of rings. I believe that originally, there was a drop of some sort (maybe a pearl) suspended from the central loop, which would have added length and movement. It would be a very simple matter to add a drop should the new owner wish, but it is quite unnecessary and only a matter of taste.

During the 19th century, when these earrings were made, black jewelr was necessary as most people experienced periods of mourning, for which there were strict dress codes. Today, we can enjoy this jewelry for it's beauty and elegance. These earrings will match any outfit and suit any occasion. They are extremely versatile and comfortable to wear.

Marks and Metal: Wires are marked 14k.

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Possible missing drop - see above. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
