Bow brooches were made popular by the French letter-writer Madame Sevigne and have never really gone out of style. This exceptional piece of jewelry combines the functionality of both a brooch and a pendant. Beautifully modeled, this bow jewel has the well-rounded look of a broad red and white striped ribbon. Entirely pave set with diamonds and wonderful pink-red rubies. The diamonds are irregularly shaped rose cut and the rubies are square cushion native cut - indicating simple technology. What the maker lacked in technology, he made up for in workmanship. The quality of the workmanship and the gems is exceptional. The simple cut of the stones indicates an earlier jewel, possibly 18th century and Georgian in origin. We will guarantee it to be no later than the Victorian era. The back of the brooch/pendant shows the versatility of the piece. Simple C-clasp catches the golden pin. The hinged side of the brooch sits on a fully revolving fitting that can turn 360 degrees as it is mounted on top of a golden screw. The screw with pin can easily be removed making the bow more comfortable when worn as a pendant. There are a pair of large, flat loops through which a ribbon or chain can be threaded. Thus, the bow can be worn as a pendant. During the Georgian era, pendants were supported on velvet or silk ribbons around the throat. The loops on the back of the bow are ideally suited for threading a ribbon. An inverted long hook was used to suspend a watch or further piece of jewelry.
