Antique Georgian pendant. Silver, gold and diamonds. Made in France 18th century.

Measurements:

Weight is 5.1 grams. Approximately 1 inch (24mm) long, excluding the loop.

Description :

Border of rose cut diamonds forming an openwork heart shape. Suspended in the middle is a larger rose cut diamond (0.36ct) that swings and sways independently of the rest of the heart as it is attached via a pair of loops. A small loop at the top for threading a thin chain. Diamonds are set in silver, as is almost always the case with antique jewelry. They are in beautifully made silver colettes with pinched sides. Back of the pendant, where it will touch the skin or clothes, is in gold.

Marks and Metal:

various marks on loop. Gold was electronically tested as low gold over silver. At least one of the marks on the loop is the French owl (for 18k), which might mean it was later struck or that the little loop is 18k. The pendant itself is low gold.

Condition:

Good with negligible wear commensurate with age.  Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY:

Most Georgian jewelry was destroyed to cover family costs and debts or to modernise to something more updated and trendy. Some enormous pieces were broken up into smaller components, for practical as well as economic reasons. It is quite rare to find such remnants. We believe this pendant was once part of a bigger item. It's lucky for us that we are left with part of the original and that it is so wearable and romantic to this day.
