Antique Georgian necklace collar. Gold, pearls. Made in Spain late 18th to early 19th century. Barcelona.

Measurements: Weight is 24.6 grams. Approximately 16 3/4 inches (42.5cm) long.  Drop approximately 2 1/2 inches (6.5cm).

Description : An exquisite gold and pearl collar necklace. Made to surround the neck with the drops falling at the nape of the neck. From the back to the front, the necklace is composed of 20 gold and pearl flowers. A central pearl surrounded by numerous pearls forming the petals of these daisy-like flowers. Each section is joined to its neighbours by a pair of round loops on either side of an oval loop. This gives the necklace flexibility and movement. The centre is a larger flower with larger pearls and another ring of tiny seed pearls seperating them. Loops attached to tiny versions of these flowers drop on either side of the 5 central flower-stations - a pair of them under the central element. Added to this is a much larger drop in the center composed of a central large pearl, a pair of concentric rings of smaller and bigger pearls and then finally, a border of small flowers, much like those described above, with larger pearls at the cardinal points.

The pearls are assumed to be natural due to the age of the necklace, but have not been tested as such.
The clasp is typical of the Georgian period - a fine, slightly arching tongue-in-groove rectangle, adorned with enamel.

The gold work holding the pearls from the back is exceptional. Beautiful, fine filigree in gold - the workmanship indicating that even for those days, this was a luxury item.
While any woman would look stunning in this necklace, it is particularly suitable as bridal or wedding jewelry.

Marks and Metal: As expected of jewelry from this period, no marks found. Antique gold is not homogenous and various purity might be used. Our electronic tester tested this as very high k, but we will guarrantee at least 18k, which is the usual minimum standard for antique Spanish jewelry.

Condition: Considering the age and delicacy of this necklace, it is in very good condition. There are two minor flaws, both near the back: enamel loss on the clasp and two missing small pearls on one of the flowers - quite unnoticeable and easily replaced.   Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

THE STORY: Natural pearl jewelry from the 18th century is to be found in many Mediterranean countries. However, this necklace, bought in Barcelona, Spain, is definitely a cut above the others as can be seen by the wonderful gold filigree work and the fine settings of the pearls.
The design is very rich, also echoing the aesthetic of Barcelona and its fabulous heritage.
