Antique Georgian Regency necklce. Gold and amethysts. Made in England circa 1820-1830.

Measurements: 15 1/4 inches (39cm) long. Weight is 42.1 grams.

Description : Necklace consisting of 9 amethyst and cannetille sections connected via a sturdy 18k gold chain. Deep purple, oval amethysts, open backed, are raised by prongs above a ribbon of gold rising from a border of beautiful gold filigree and granulation cannetille work. Finely twisted wires form flowers surrounded by golden granulation and with larger gold spheres in their centers, having additional textured surfaces. Cannetille is mounted on oval gold supporting borders at the back. Color of amethysts is a fabulous deep purple, contrasting and complemented perfectly with gold. The solid strength of the gems is further contrasted by the delicacy and detail of the cannetille, subtly adding further interest to our unconscious eye. Quality of the workmanship is excellent. Later attempts to emulate this work never achieved this fine quality. Originally, the cannetille sections of this necklace might have been threaded on a ribbon or other chain which has been replaced with a sturdier chain. This necklace is as wearable today as it was over 200 years ago and is suitable to show off your favorite old jeans, smartest work suit or gown for a ball and opera.

Marks and Metal: The clasp is marked 750 for 18k gold and has another small maker's marks. The cannetille disks were acid tested as 14k.

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
