Description:
Exceptional, long necklace or sautoir - absolutely original and very rare. Made of gold with polished carnelians in bright orange-brown surrounded by gold spectacle collets or borders of alternating gold and pearls. Each section is joined to the next by a pair of chains that start together at the upper section and part to form a 'v' on the next station. Alternating pearl and non-pearl sections. At the bottom is a large round gold link that connects to a very big heart, cut and highly polished like the other stones in carnelian and surrounded by gold and diamond borders. Tongue in groove clasp echoes the other non-pearl stations.
Quality of the workmanship is outstanding. Carnelians are well matched. Pearls are bright and lively.
Marks:
the clasp has the French cock mark used 1798-1809 in Paris. The head faces right and there is a curve at the bottom of the outline.
Condition:
very good with negligible wear commensurate with age. The carnelians and pearls are all present in good order and the gold chains are also in good shape. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
THE STORY:
During the Georgian era, carnelians were way more popular and in demand than today, when we tend to overlook these beautiful gems. Long necklaces that are amazingly versatile and can be used in a multiple of ways were made with the time and lavish attention to detail and design that is simply not dreamt of in today's world where what counts is the bottom dollar.
