Antique Georgian French Giardinetti Brooch Silver Gold Diamonds Unisex (7022)

Antique Georgian giardinetti brooch. Silver, gold and rose-cut diamonds. Made in France, late 18th century. Unisex - suitable for a man or a woman.

Measurements: Weight is 6.4 grams. 1 3/8 inches 34mm long.

Description : Shaped like an arrangement of flowers or a posy with stems radiating from a ring and little leaves forming a circle around it. The flowers are enclosed in an openwork naturalistic arch of foliage. Stems are in gold, diamonds are set in silver, as was the custom at the time (to show them off to best effect in candle-light). Gold backing to the silver and gold clasp and pin. Light and lively, the quality of the workmanship is beautiful with the diamonds, astonishingly chosen to conform to the shape of the leaves and flowers. Pin is possibly a long-ago replacement.

Marks and Metal: French gold hallmarks on the c of the clasp and on pin are possibly later.
