Antique Georgian fob pendant. Yellow and red 18k gold and turquoise. Made in France 1819-1838. Unisex - suitable for a man or a woman.
Measurements: Weight is 4.3 grams. Approximately 1 1/4inches (3.2cm) long.
Description : Elegant, lyre shaped pendant fob. Extremely fine work with tiny detail, as only the Georgians were capable of creating. The attention to detail and aesthetics is particularly reflective of French jewelry at this period. This fob pendant has some fabulous features such as the 'secret compartment' at the bottom - possibly for holding a pinch of snuff or a little 'something else'. Tiny hinges and great workmanship make for a perfect fit and secure closure. The main body of the pendant fob is a lyre - a harp-like musical instrument with gold wires down the middle and gently scrolling sides, invoking the days of Ancient Greece. Foliate theme with a line of scrolling cabochon turquoise in golden colettes with beaded borders.
The upper, outer corners are in the forms of ram's heads. A tiny half starburst of gold between them. Rams look outwards and we see the intricately coiling horns in profile. A small loop linked to a larger, red gold loop. The bottom of the base is also in red gold, while the top of the base is in yellow gold foliage, matching that of the sides of the lyre.
Front and back are identical.
Marks and Metal: Hidden on the loop, cojoined to the pendant is a ram's head, which is the French mark for 18k gold, used 1819-1838. Gold was also electronically tested.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
