Antique Georgian Earrings Gold Garnets Day Night Drop Dangle Dutch (7020)
Antique Georgian earrings ear pendants. 18k gold and garnets. Made in the Netherlands, early 19th century.
Measurements: Weight is 8.8 grams. Length, not including wires is 1 1/2 inches (just under 4cm).
Description : Earrings made of two separate sections linked via a small loop. The upper section can be worn alone by day and both can be worn for a bigger look, at night. Hence the term Day/Night or Top/Drop. Upper sections consist of a round disc of gold set in the center with a deep red, faceted garnet. Colette-settings with puckered sides is an indication of an early date and are beautifully hand made. The tear-shaped drops are set with a tear-shaped garnet at the top and a round garnet below it. All garnets of a deep red color and broadly faceted. They are large gems. Flaring from the small area between the gems is a fan shape on either side of the drops in repousse gold. The puckered sides of the colette settings add subtle interest. Rounded, closed backs, typical of the Georgian period. Wires with clasps that close in the front - earrings are inserted from the back to the front of the ear, which is typical of very early jewelry and indicates that these earrings are entirely original. (most antique earrings have replaced wires). Light weight makes them comfortable to wear.
Marks and Metal: Back of bottom sections and finding (wires) of upper sections with lion head facing left, indicating 18k gold.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
