Antique Georgian Earrings Gold Amethysts Cannetille Ear Pendants English(6958)
Antique Georgian Regency earrings ear pendants. 18ct gold and amethysts. Made 1820 to 1830 in England, UK.
Measurements: Weight is 8.4 grams.
Description : Classic Georgian elongated pear or tear-shaped drop earrings. The close-backed Amethysts are a lovely purple color. They are held in colette settings. The colette settings are very interesting with parallel engraved lines and wavy, curved tops, some of which extend right over the upper edge of the amethysts, holding them in the same way as a more modern claw setting. The color of the amethysts are wonderfully complemented by the gold. In contrast to the solid, strong stones, they are highly detailed with very fine filigree work that twists and spirals, forming 3-dimentional, sculptural forms, notably pyramidal forms. Golden spheres of differing sizes are intersperced between the filigree work and add interest and connect some of the openwork sections. An openwork shell of gold at the bottom. Gold wire fittins are almost certainly replacements, which is very common in Georgian earrings. They are easy to insert and very comfortable to wear. Workmanship is excellent. Exquisitely fine cannetille like this cannot be reproduced. In fact, even the Victorians attempted to make cannetille jewelry and their efforts are much clumsier. The finess of the Georgian work is unmatched. The earrings are extremely elegant and yet comfortable to wear. Unassuming and yet stunning.
Marks and Metal: No marks. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
