Antique earrings long ear pendants. 14k gold and carved glass. Made early 20th century during the Art Nouveau or Art Deco era.
Measurements: Length, not including wires, is approximately 2 3/4 inches (7cm). Weight is 7.5 grams.
Description : Very long ear pendants. The surmounts are of gold, in the form of little flowers with fine detail. These suspend a thin gold chain composed of both long rectangular and round links, which allow the earrings to swing and sway as the wearer moves. The elongated navette shaped drops are clear glass, carved with a scrolling pattern. The glass would be in perpetual motion when worn and would glisten and catch the light as the wearer moves. Extremely attractive and elegant.
Simple gold wires with a c-catch to ensure security, are easy to insert and comfortable to wear.
During the early 20th century, many of the finest jewellers, such as Rene Lalique, made wonderful jewelry from glass. Often they mixed valuable and semi-precious gems with paste and enamel. The objective was to produce something worthy of art and not a mere display of large gemstones. In France, there was a long history of using glass in fine jewelry and we have owned some wonderful earrings as far back as the 18th century that combine gold and glass.
Marks: There are tiny 14k marks on the wires. Gold was also acid tested to ensure metal purity.
Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. A loupe will show miniscule nibbles/wear to the glass, exactly as you would expect after a century, but not visible with the naked eye and only mentioned for the sake of accuracy. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
