Antique Belle Epoque brooch in the form of a cat. Diamonds, rubies, gold and silver Made early 20th century - prior to WWI.
Measurements: approx 2 1/4 inches in length (6cm). 3.84ct diamonds, 0.60ct rubies. Total weight 21.60 grams.
Description : Brooch in the form of a cat. Realistically modelled with a bushy tail and fine features. The cat is entirely set with diamonds. Typical of antique jewelry, diamonds are set in a layer of silver over a layer of gold. This showed the diamonds off more advantageously in candle or gas light. The gold protected the ladie's clothes from the tarnish of silver. The little metal cells containing the diamonds seem to float independantly and the spaces inbetween them give the impression of the luxurious undulating lines of a cat. We can almost feel the creature breathing. It wears a beautiful collar tied with a bow of red rubies, set in gold. The eyes are believed to be amber and are entirely realistic. Gold tip of the nose. The cat looks as though it has just pawed at a person or toy and looks ahead as though questioning or challenging the viewer. Back and clasp are gold. Very beautiful workmanship. The ultimate brooch for any cat-lover.
Marks: No marks. Metal was electronically tested.
