Antique late Victorian Classic Revival brooch pendant. 18k yellow gold, sterling silver, diamonds, sapphires and carved Tiger's Eye Chalcedony. Made in France circa 1900.

Measurements: Wingspan is approximately 2 inches (5.2cm) long. Weighs 9.1 grams. Approximately 1.00 ct diamonds and 1.00 ct sapphires.

Exquisitely made and imagined jewel in the form of a pair of butterfly wings centered by the fully carved head of the Roman god Mercury. Rose cut diamonds set in silver as was the Victorian custom, interspersed with Colette set blue sapphires. A spectacle set diamond drops from the bottom. The center is magnificently carved Tiger's Eye carved almost fully in the round in the form of the Classic god, Mercury. Beautiful detail. A pair of gold horns seem to rise behind his head in front of a pair of curling, scrolling butterfly anthers. The back of the piece is in 18k yellow gold. There is a small pair of loops for hanging it as a pendant. A pin with tubular clasp, attached by a screw, can be removed to facilitate wearing the piece as a pendant. The tubular clasp might be a replacement although there is no sign of soldering.

Marks: French eagle head marks for 18k gold on the brooch behind Mercury's head and on the pin.

Condition: good with minor wear commensurate with age. Catch/tube of the pin is probably a replacement. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
