Antique Art Nouveau pendant pocket knife pen knife gold nymph floral German(7579)

Antique Art Nouveau pendant folding pocket pen knife. Gold and steel. Made in Germany early 1900's.  
 

Measurements:

Weight is 12.5 grams. A little over 2 1/4 inches (6cm) not including the loop.
Length of one blad is 34mm; length of 2nd blade 27mm.   

Description :

Versatile pendant that also functions as a folding double bladed pocket knife. 
A large gold loop, fully rotatable, suspends a long gold housing. Repousse gold work from top to bottom on both sides. Depicts a female figure - elongated and elegant as is typical of the Art Nouveau taste - seemingly dreaming. She has wings so is some kind of fairy or nymph. She is surrounded by scrollin flowers and foliage, also typical of the Art Nouveau taste. The flowers appear to be poppies, symbolic of sleep and dreaming. 
Beautiful workmanship.
There are two steel blades to this pocket knife - one slightly longer than the other. Backs of blades are flat so that you do not cut your finger as you press down.  They fit firmly into the housing and are very strong and solidly made, as is to be expected from great German metalwork.

Marks and Metal:

Gold with engraved 10k BR; Longer knife with engraved GERMANY; shorter knife with engraved EB.
     

Condition:

THE STORY:

During the Victorian era, so much thought and effort went into making products of quality. Mass production and the bottom line were secondary to Art, quality and the success of the design. People took pride in what they made. Jewelry and other related items were inventive and versatile. Here we have what today would be a purely functional product, but in the hands of a proud German manufacturer, it has become an item of jewelry. The design places the date firmly in the Art Nouveau era - elongated women, dreamlike and surrounded by flowers, especially poppies, are a clear symbol of the era.
The knife - pendant is suitable for a man or a woman. Wear dangling from a long chain, it's bound to be useful as well as catch the eye and interest of everyone who sees it.
