Antique Victorian Art Nouveau earrings. Diamonds, enamel, 14k gold and a little silver. Made late 19th - early 20th century.
Measurements: total weight is 12.2 grams. Width is 3/4 inch (2cm).
Description : Earrings in the form of pansy flowers, modelled in 14k gold. Enamelled pansies were popular during the Art Nouveau era. These earrings with enamel in shades of off-white, pink and purple with the darker detail at the outside. Each petal is outlined with a border of diamonds set in silver. The center of the flowers also set with a slightly larger rose cut diamond.
Upper petals are joined to the lower by a sort of hinged arrangement at the back, which allows some movement. The petal arrangement is almost sculptural with the petals falling in different layers and given the slight movement, very realistic.
As was the custom during past centuries, diamonds are set in a thin layer of silver placed over the gold. This was in order to show the diamonds off to best advantage.
The backs have been replaced with posts instead of original simple wires.
Marks and Metal: No marks. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.
Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. See above re backs. Care needs to be taken when inserting the earrings as soft gold posts can bend. (I found it very easy to insert, but mentioned for the sake of caution). Butterflies are very secure. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer. Note that video is a little over-exposed so showing too much light.
The Story: Pansies were a very popular subject for jewelry during the Victorian and Art Nouveau eras. The word in French means to think and the idea was that the giver was making a romantic gesture to the recipient. Gift giving was a big part of Victorian culture. There is an emotional message in these earrings that goes beyond the immediately obvious artistic and creative side.
