Antique Art Deco necklace pendant gold platinum diamonds sapphires French (7545)

Antique Art Deco pendant necklace. 18k gold, 850 platinum, diamonds, sapphires. circa 1920 - 1925.

Measurements:

Weight is 4.6 grams. Length of pendant alone is approximately 1 5/8inches (4cm).  Chain 47cm. 

Description :

Necklace in platinum backed in gold with platinum chain. Pendant of necklace with a double scrolling top, all pave set with rosecut diamonds and Old mine cuts in their centres.  At point where scrolls join is a part wreath of colette-set diamonds from which a long line of identically set diamonds descends, the eye being lead from top to bottom of pendant. the bottom is a circle with rectangle above it. The circle with concentric rings - the outer border colette set diamonds that loop around one another; then a gold border followed by a circle of calibre cut deep blue sapphires and finally another old mine cut diamond. The curving rectangle above is partly openwork with foliate  and scrolling diamonds and an upper of calibre cut sapphire, set in gold. All upper surfaces of metal with filigree edges.  
Dark sapphires are synthetic, as was largely the custom at this time.  

Marks and Metal:

Both sides of the scrolls are marked with owl and masked man marks (for 18k gold and platinum respectively). there are also marks on the loops of the chain, but we cannot read them. 
     

Condition:

THE STORY:

There is jewelry made during the Art Deco era and there is jewelry that simply screams 'Art Deco'. This pendant necklace is really the latter. The design is pure Deco and echoes the fantastic architecture in some of Manhattan, New York City's gorgeous doors and grilles. The combination of gems is fabulous and classic Art Deco. The workmanship is great. Remember, this was the era when French jewellers reached the zenith of gorgeous jewelry making. It was also the era when synthetic sapphires were seen as the equivalent of their nature-born counterparts.
