Vintage Art Deco powder compact minaudier. Gold, silver, rubies, enamel. Made in France by Van Cleef and Arpels, 1920-30's.

Rectangular powder compact. There are two hinged lids - an outer and an inner lid. The outside of the compact and top of inner lid are covered with black enamel. The top of the outer lid is additionally decorated with inset gold and rubies. The floral pattern called Daisy, has a black background inset with gold flowers with engraved detail. A trio of rubies in raised collet settings add to the luxury and artistic design. The black background was called lacquer by the people we got this from in Paris, but we believe it is enamel.

A long silver thumbpiece lifts the outer lid which has a mirror inside. The hinged inner lid with top in black enamel opens to the actual powder compartment with traces of powder still inside. The black enamel inner lid lifts at a right angle to the top lid.

As with all Van Cleef and Arpels jewelry and objects of virtu, the quality of the workmanship is extraordinary and extremely luxurious.

Marks: there are a number of marks in different places on the box: Van Cleef and Arpels, serial number 76723, a slightly illegible French hallmark which we think is the eagle head used for gold over metal; A diamond-shaped lozenge, which is the form of a French maker's mark with VCA monogram around the Vendome column; another serial number - 7831. Inside the inner lid is a French Minerva head for 950 silver, made in Paris.

Condition: very minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures for details and don't hesitate to ask question, which we will do our best to answer.

Note: a bag with the same daisy pattern is in the book: Set in Style The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels by Sarah D. Coffin, page 159.
