Antique Arts & Crafts necklace. 9ct gold, turquoise and pearl. Made in the United Kingdom by Murrle Bennett & Co., circa 1910.

Measurements: Weight is 3.2 grams. Length is 16.3/4 inches (42.5cm). Drop is 2 1/2 inches (6.5cm).

Description : Combining naturalistic, figural and humorous topics, the delicate and pretty necklace is made in the form of a spider, dangling from its web. Realistically modelled, the turquoise and gold spider is either ascending or descending, via a knife-edge gold bar, that dangles from a triangular, assymetric spider web. The loop that connects the bar to the web allows the spider to swing and sway as the wearer moves - that adds naturalism. Beautifully designed with a small pearl in the center.
The web is suspended from a gold chain with jump-spring clasp.

The necklace combines a great sense of fun, love of nature with beautiful workmanship, which was the trademark of the Arts & Crafts movement as represented by Murrle Bennett & Co.

Marks and Metal: Back of spider with 9ct and MB logo for Murrle Bennett & Co.

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.

Murrle Bennett was a partnership located in both London and Pforzheim, which was then the center of much Arts & Crafts jewelry production. Famous designers such as Theodor Fahrner created fascinating jewelry of good quality, which was sold in such outlets as Liberty's (Liberty of London) and other high end retailers.
Spiders were a popular subject, not only for their aesthetic appeal and representing the subtleties of nature, but for the message conveyed by their beautiful webs, symbolic of industry and craftsmanship.
