Antique Victorian earrings mourning jewelry. 14k yellow gold, black enamel, onyx and minute pearls. Made circa 1860-80.

Measurements: Length, not including wires approx 1 1/8 inch (3cm). Main part of earrings Main part of earrings are 7/8 inch (22mm) long. Weight is 4.8 grams.

Description : Oval shaped drops suspended from loops so that they swing freely as the wearer moves. Concentric rings of various forms and heights, rising to the highest point in the center. On the outside is a wide, sloping border of gold with black enamel patterns in semi-circular and rectangular reserves, all done in black enamel. This is followed at the highest edge by a ring of gold beading and then a gold collette rises above to hold an onyx oval central platform. The black onyx itself is set in its center with a gold diamond or kite shape, set with a minute pearl.

Victorians wore black jewelry in order to conform to the strict laws of mourning. This did not preclude their jewelry from being very elegant, as is the case with these earrings, which are great looking and highly wearable today, in much happier circumstances. They are very versatile and can be worn with any kind of outfit and suitable for a young 'Goth' girl to a more mature lady or for you in your jeans to you in your business suit. The earrings are light and comfortable to wear. Make the perfect go-to earrings.

Marks and Metal : As is to be expected of jewelry of this period, there are no marks on the earrings.

Condition: Good with minor wear commensurate with age, in particular at the back where there are a number of small dings. These do not impinge on the appearance of the earrings in any way from the front. Wires are replaced. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
