Antique Victorian Earrings Hardstone Cameo 18k Gold Classic Greek Revival (6656)

Antique Victorian earrings. 18k yellow gold and carved hardstone cameos. Made circa 1880's.

 

Measurements: Diameter approximately 1 inch (2.5cm) including the globular protrusions. (a tad less without the globules). Weight is 12 grams.

 

Description : During the 19th century, the Victorians were passionate about everything from the ancient, Classic world and this is reflected in much of the jewelry produced at the time, which was made to echo that long-ago period. Here are a pair of hardstone cameos depicting the ancient Greek gods Zeus and Poseidon. Each is shown in profile. A true pair as they look towards each other. Both are bearded with curly hair. Poseidon with his trident behind him. Zeus with laurel leaves. Carving beautiful and deep. Grounds are lovely orange-brown. The cameos are set in fine mounts of gold wirework granulated protuberances at the cardinal points. A ring of open circles, followed by a double braided band and finally, a large tubular gold border. Wires are hinged, easy to insert and comfortable to wear. They have simple c-catches that add to security. Gold bars at the back add strength and stability.

 

Marks: No marks were found. Gold was acid tested to ensure metal purity.
