Antique Victorian brooch. Diamonds, rubies, 18k gold and silver. Made 19th century.

Measurements: Weight is 5.9 grams. 7/8" across (1.25cm).

Description : Naturalistically modelled rooster or chicken standing within the circle of a crescent moon. The body of the chicken and the moon are pave set with rosecut diamonds. Curling tail feathers in beaded silver. Head in gold with comb and wattle in tiny bright red beautiful cabochon rubies. Diamonds are set in silver, which was typical of the way diamonds were set at the time - in order to show them off to best effect in gas or candle light. Back and details of head are 18k yellow gold. (see 'photos for layer of silver over gold).
Hinged pin and simple c-clasp.
The subject and the workmanship are indicative of French jewelry of the period. The chicken or rooster is often considered a national symbol of France. However, there are no French hallmarks present, so we cannot be certain of the origin of this wonderful brooch.
A careful look at the back of the brooch reveals some residual evidence such as gold screws (now fixed), that during the 19th century this brooch might have been detachable and used as part of a whole set of jewelry. It was no doubt fixed in place generations ago, so we are left guessing. This adds to the mystery and charm of antique jewelry.

Marks and Metal: No marks found. Gold was electronically tested to ensure metal purity.

Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
