Antique Edwardian Belle Epoque Sautoir necklace long chain. 18k gold. Made in France prior to circa 1900 - 1919. (see below).

Measurements: Length is approximately 60.5 inches (153.75cm). Weighs 29.4 grams.

Description : Very long chain necklace, known as a sautoir in France. Made of identical fairly long oval, links, narrow at one end and wide at the other. Links twist slightly to accommodate fitting together in a smoothe fit. Can be worn wound around the neck more than once. Very versatile, these sautoirs are fabulous accessories, matching any kind of outfit from jeans to the smartest chic. As always, French workmanship of the period is unbeatable for quality and design.

Dating: we originally thought the sautoir dated to the Art Deco period due to the bold, geometric design. However, the hallmark of the horse head was used at latest 1919, so clearly, the sautoir must be earlier than we believed. It is not uncommon for very early pieces from the Victorian or even Georgian eras to have strong, 'modern' designs, which remind us to put aside our preconceptions of what they were capable of and to admire them all the more.

Marks: There are a number of hallmarks on the loops alongside the clasp including the horse head (at least twice) which indicates 18k gold, made in France, outside of Paris. It was used up to 1919.

Condition: Good with negligible wear commensurate with age. Please see enlarged pictures and don't hesitate to ask questions which we will do our best to answer.
